Back in the basement... with another entry in the journal of Walter the Frankenstein monster.
So my mother calls me up tonight. While I am trying to eat dinner no less. I had finally gotten home from work and just sat down to eat some Chinese and the phone rings. She says she is going to make a long story short, but she doesn't even come close.
She was talking to her neighbor and the UPS truck pulls up. My dad signs for a box, sets in the house and proceeds to make dinner. After finally eating their dinner (which I gently remind her that I am trying to do while she is telling me this story) ( which also seems to be completely irrelevant to her) they get a chance to look at the box. Low and behold, it is definitely addressed to my mother and she has no idea what it might be. She hasn't ordered anything in months.
So, they open the darned box and inside is a Mac laptop. She didn't order it. She didn't pay for it. She even called her credit card company and there are no charges to her card.
My dad hops on the Internet to track the package ( on his PC; we have never worked on any Macs; just chance I guess). He find the place that sent the package, but neither is any closer to figuring out how or why they got it. She poses the possibility that she won it from one of the on-line surveys she fills out all the time, but has no recollection of anything involving a free laptop.
And she's asking me what she should do about it. Should she call the company that sent it (with no real packing slip, I might add)? Should she keep it? What should she do?
I don't really have a clue. But what does occur to me is that she's the parent. Right? Aren't our parents supposed to give us (the children) the moral compass for these sorts of decisions as opposed to the other way around? If she's confused and torn on what to do, what makes her think that I have any better ideas?
All I have to say is..... its this sort of parenting that drove me to creating a Frankenstein monster in the first place.
I love you mom and dad.
